Cristo Rei: Lisbon’s Watchful Embrace

Standing tall above the Tagus, Cristo Rei is more than a monument — it’s a symbol of peace, faith, and gratitude.

A towering thank you to divine protection

Inspired by the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, the Cristo Rei was built in the aftermath of World War II as a gesture of gratitude for sparing Portugal from the devastation. Inaugurated in 1959, this monument quickly became a spiritual beacon and a striking landmark for the city.

A panoramic altar over the Tagus

Perched on a 133-metre cliff in Almada, the Cristo Rei offers one of the most breathtaking views in Portugal. From the viewing platform, visitors can take in the full skyline of Lisbon — from the 25 de Abril Bridge to the city’s historic quarters — all under the open arms of the monument.

Faith carved in concrete and silence

The Sanctuary of Cristo Rei isn’t just a viewpoint — it’s a space for reflection. With chapels, gardens, and walking paths, it’s a peaceful escape for those seeking silence and perspective. The statue itself stands 28 meters tall atop an 82-meter pedestal, forming a cross-shaped structure that blends devotion and architecture.

A journey across the river — and into lisbon

Cristo Rei is just a short ferry or drive from Lisbon. Cross the 25 de Abril Bridge or sail across the Tagus, and you’ll arrive at this monumental site. Many combine the visit with stops in Almada’s historic center or along the riverfront for a full-day experience.
